When should you repair or replace your concrete driveway?

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

Driveways are poured to withstand frequent heavy loads over many, many years. Your car can travel over your driveway countless times a day, not to mention heavier vehicles like vans and trucks. However, as time goes on, and as the environment around your driveway shifts and changes, cracks or divots may start to appear. So, if your driveway is looking a little worse for wear, how can you know when you should repair, or replace your concrete driveway?

How bad is the damage?

Cracks or divots over 2 inches are better off being replaced, whereas lesser imperfections can be fixed with a resurfacing.

How recent is the damage?

If you’re noticing issues with your concrete driveway only a couple of years after it has been poured, there is a good chance it was not poured correctly. If this is the case, the concrete is likely to continue to split or any issues worsen. We suggest getting on top of these problems as soon as possible.

Are you having drainage issues?

A well-designed and installed driveway in good condition, should not be affected by typical water exposure. However, if you’re noticing pooling water or crumbling concrete, it’s likely that your concrete is experiencing drainage issues. Left unresolved, your concrete will continue to deteriorate. Drainage solutions such as strip drains, curbing or replacing damaged piping can rectify your driveway’s drainage without needing to replace the entire driveway. However, if the damage has affected the integrity of the concrete, you will need to completely replace the concrete driveway.
